About Us

Steward Council (formerly the “Activist Council”)

The Steward Council is a large community of teaching and research faculty who are actively involved in building UAOSU through conversations with and outreach to colleagues. As the primary body of UAOSU, the Steward Council informs the work of the Organizing Committee through participation in workgroups.

Organizing Committee

The Organizing Committee is comprised of Steward Council members who have demonstrated a significant commitment to building UAOSU and serve as the decision-making body of UAOSU.

Organizing Committee members are:

  • broadly representative in terms of unit, rank, location, part-time/full status;
  • experienced in building our faculty union.

Both the Steward Council and Organizing Committee are interim bodies that will serve through the completion of a membership drive and the ratification of a constitution.

Organizing Committee Interaction Agreement and Decision Making Model

Principles

The Organizing Committee of UAOSU uses a consensus model of decision making.  In consensus-based decision making, rather than voting for your prefered option, you indicate whether you consent to a given decision, with the goal of making the best decision to which everyone consents. To ensure that our decision making process adheres to these principles, we will revisit this agreement at least once per term.

We Agree To:

  • Base decisions on evidence and the experience of members and staff.
  • Trust the recommendations and work of sub-committees.
  • Focus on the goal of building a strong and healthy union.
  • Act in solidarity after decisions are made.
  • Respect each other’s time – come prepared to meetings and stay on task.

Decision Making Model

  • Decisions of the Organizing Committee will only be taken at officially scheduled meetings after a thorough discussion.  Only those present may vote.
  • For a given proposal, members indicate their consent as follows:
    • Consent “I consent to the proposal.” [raised fist]
    • Concern “I need more information.” [raised finger]
    • Block “I oppose the proposal.” [crossed arms]
  • There are no “stand asides” or abstentions as we all need to engage in the work of the organizing committee.
  • A proposal will only move forward with at most 2 blocking votes as strong decisions require near unanimity. Blocks should be reserved for those instances of serious opposition to a proposed course of action.

Meeting Facilitation

  • Meeting facilitators set the agenda, guide the discussion, and indicate decision making items.  Facilitation duties are shared by committee members on a voluntary basis.
  • Any member can request that items be added to the agenda or that a proposal be considered.
  • Facilitation should ensure that a decision is made with no more than two rounds of voting.  An initial round may be used to query members’ views and ensure that all concerns are heard and, if possible, addressed before a second round of voting.
